Coaches

THANK YOU!

Our club is 100% volunteer-run. Everyone you see mowing, coaching, and registering players is a volunteer! We can’t operate without volunteers, so thank you for coaching!

If you are new to coaching soccer, the idea can seem overwhelming and may even be downright confusing if you don’t know the sport. If you volunteered to coach under these circumstances, we want you to know that there are plenty of resources available for you. There are some things that you can do to make your season go more smoothly, however.

  • Have open communication with the parents of the players on your team and be willing to ask for their help! There will certainly be parents that will be grateful that you took the lead role, and they will be willing to help you as long as you communicate with them, so utilize their skills and talents! Be honest about your shortcomings and don’t be afraid to be straightforward with your requests.
  • Join and use Okolona Soccer Club’s Discord so that you can stay up to date on Club business and make connections with other coaches who have valuable experience and resources to help you–many of whom haves coached your age group already!
  • Figure out what your goals are for the season–it should probably have something to do with your kids having fun while developing their soccer skills and building their character. Build your practices around those goals by focusing on activities that help achieve them.
  • Spend a few minutes prior to each practice or before the start of each week to prepare yourself for future practices. You may need to do some research to teach yourself the rules of the game or learn proper terminology. Even if you played soccer or coaches when you were younger, you may find that you need to refresh yourself with certain aspects of the game or new standards for youth fitness. And remember, when in doubt, reach out to the other coaches in the club for help!
